Item # 6-33
This large, five gallon or more, tri-colored double-lug-handled Stevens Pottery churn, was made in Baldwin County, Georgia. Stevens Pottery was owned by Henry Stevens, an Englishman, who was actively producing pottery in the Milledgeville area around 1861 and after. He died in 1883, but the pottery continued, producing mostly brick and cimney pots in its last years. Many potters worked at Stevens pottery, including African-Americans from the area. Although this piece was made at Stevens Pottery, it is unmarked. It has one hairline crack. There is a piece of pottery stuck to the lip where another piece in the kiln exploded and a fragment blew onto this one during firing.
Stevens Pottery produced some of the more unusual Georgia pottery, beginning in the 1800’s, when the pottery was founded near Milledgeville, Georgia. If you are interested in Georgia pottery history, use your search engine to check out the photographs, documents, and other information provided by Eileen
BabbMcAdams: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/coopersnews.html. .
Unlike the pottery of the alkaline-glaze traditional to Georgia, Stevens pottery reflected the English pottery heritage, with many of the early Stevens potters hailing from England and Ireland as the 1870 US census listed on the website shows.
