Two gallon jug wire-stamped JBL
(Jesse Bradford Long, 1805-1868). Jesse left Crawford County for Texas
in 1862. He most likely used the wire stamp until about 1850, when he
began using the traditional Crawford County carved stamp. Only a handful
of wire-stamped JBL pieces are known. This is the only two-gallon jug.
Jesse is best known for his jars and beanpots. |

One-half
gallon paintrock- glazed storage or preserve jar (aka beanpot) can be
attributed to Jesse Braford Long, who was born in 1805, potted in
Crawford County until he left for Texas in 1882, and where he died
around 1888. The form, the remaining handle, and the glaze all
point to JBL as the maker of this jar. The
multi-colored glaze, in reds, browns, and orange tones, does not show
well in the photos. The jar is missing one handle and is worn around
the rim from heavy use

This cobalt-decorated salt glaze
two gallon jug is marked with a brushed cobalt "2" and
two flowers with a stem and leaves. Although difficult to see in the
photographs, the front surface of this beautifully decorated jug is
spider-webbed with what appear to be surface, or glaze, cracks, that do
not penetrate the body of the jug. One area of the jug did not
fire as well as the rest (see photos), leaving a clay-colored area |
